equine wet labs
woke up today at 6.30am. yes on a saturday. not fun. but it turned out to be totally worth it!!
today was the annual SCAAEP wet lab to which hundreds of vet students from all over the country come and participate in learning and applying techniques related to equine medicine. my current path is small animal exclusive, but hey it doesn’t hurt to get exposure to large animal medicine as well. it’s educational, fun, and of course free! (:
over the course of 4 hours i learned how to take/read radiographs of the carpal region, watched a horse get anesthetized, learned how to throw certain restraint knots in a rope, got dragged onto my butt b/c the horse woke up sooner than anticipated while i was holding onto the rope lol, performed a Caslick’s procedure on a fresh specimen of equine vulva, got a tissue biopsy from the uterus of a mare, learned how to age horses by looking at their teeth, and how to float a horse’s teeth [which actually has nothing to do with putting them in water lol].
twas an exciting day indeed. if only the temperature had been a bit nicer…all the kiddos from michigan/colorado/other more northern states were laughing at our lack of tolerance to <70 degree weather. apparently it was in the negatives last night when some of them got onto their flights lol. but they did acknowledge their heat/humidity tolerance is pretty sucky so we win there :P
waking up so early 6 days in a row has taken a toll on me…i napped for 3 hours yesterday and 2 hours today =.= my ability to limit naps to 20 mins is deteriorating…hope my body adapts soon to this crazy schedule.
